It is not surprising that Mpumalanga is one of our favourite places in South Africa. The name means “land of the rising sun,” and this moniker could not be more apt. With so much natural beauty, rich history, and many adventures, you can rise with the sun and be filled with warm excitement as you explore this wonderful area.
Kaste Guesthouse is one of the most affordable guest houses in Secunda and serves as the perfect base from which to explore this province with something for everyone. Let us share some of our must-see towns and experiences to get you started.
1. Pilgrim’s Rest: Back To The Old Days
In the late 1800s, many prospectors were drawn to this small town to try their luck at finding gold. This gold rush marked the humble beginnings of this fascinating little town that has retained much of its original charm.
You will find beautifully maintained Victorian-era buildings and original mine shafts. You can even try gold panning—maybe you will strike it rich!
And while you are in the area, make sure to take a drive to the magnificent Mac Mac Falls. At over 60m high, this waterfall is a sight to behold.
2. The Capital City: Mbombela
Despite being one of the smaller provincial capitals, Mbombela (formerly known as Nelspruit) offers a good mix of urban energy and natural beauty. If you want some retail therapy, head to one of the many shopping centres like the Riverside Mall or the Promenade Shopping Centre. Or ask around about some of the smaller centres and plenty of local markets.
For a more natural experience, head to the Lowveld Botanical Gardens, just outside Mbombela. Here you will find an extensive collection of fig trees and the largest man-made rainforest in the world—well worth the visit.
3. Adventure Central: Hazyview
This busy little town offers a whole host of adventure activities, including white-water rafting on the Sabie River and ziplining through a scenic forest canopy. Close by, you will find two convenient starting points for a Kruger National Park adventure through either the Phambeni or Numbi gates.
All of these wonderful towns and experiences form part of The Panorama Route. By taking this scenic drive through Mpumalanga from Mbombela, through the Blyde River Canyon, to Hazyview, you can get a real sense of the wonders of our delightful province.
